Description
I joined the Army in 1972 as a National Serviceman and after recruit and infantry corps training was posted to 4RAR. During my initial training I was also undergoing the selection process for OCS, for which I was accepted and commenced training at Scheyville in January 1973, graduating to RAInf in December of that year and posted to 6RAR. I served in a variety of staff, training, regimental and representational appointments including United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO) Palestine in 1984-85, attended Command & Staff College in 1989, Battalion 2IC of 49RQR Ready Reserve 1992-1993 and Assistant Defence Adviser in the Australian High Commission in India in 1994-1995 before retiring as a Major in July 1996.
After defence resettlement training I successfully gained employment with an engineering consulting company in Perth but resigned 5 months later after failing to tolerate fools.
I quickly gained reemployment with a large HR recruitment and consulting company and in this role was running career transition management programs in W.A. and the mining towns of the north-west. This role led to a posting to Singapore and then subsequently Kuala Lumpur and Seoul with the same company as Country Manager of recruitment and HR consulting. A global restructuring of this company forced a return to Australia, working in the same field in Brisbane. In 2004 a network contact invited me to go to Thailand to run his Executive Search and recruitment business, a job I have done since then, taking the company from relative obscurity to where it has about 30 Thai employees and consistently ranks in the top five in Bangkok for annual revenue. In November 2013, as a partner in the company, we sold this business and in July 2014 I will retire to our farm in north-eastern Thailand about 60km from the Laos border.
I am married to Praitoon, a Thai national and we have a son, Alex, born on 17 October 2009. Alex and I share our birthdate. I also have two daughters from a previous marriage, one living in Brisbane and the other in Manchester, England.
