1973
Prior to entering OCS Scheyville in January 1973 I served three years in the ranks, including a tour of duty in South Vietnam with 3RAR and a Thai course at the RAAF School of Languages. On graduation I was allocated to RAAEC and posted to Bangkok for a year of full-time language study at Chulalongkorn University. Most of the next 30 years were spent in a series of postings connected with Thailand: SEATO HQ, RAAF School of Languages, Thai Army Staff College, and the Australian Defence Staff in Bangkok. I also got married to the young Thai lady who was my guest at our Portsea graduation.
By 2005 our three children were grown, graduated and gainfully employed, so Bunmi and I moved back to Bangkok so that she could spend time with her extended family. I do enough contract translation work to ensure a comfortable semi-retirement, and with the recent arrival of three grandchildren, we’re now making increasingly frequent trips back to Australia. Life has been very kind to me.
