Description

BAppSc, BSc, Grad Cert, Grad Dip, psc

Married to Sue since Jan 78 (35 years!). Two offspring: Amanda 32 and John 28. John graduated from RMC to RACT in 2006 but resigned in 2010.

1974-1976: Civil schooling for Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Surveying at the Western Australian Institute of Technology (now Curtin University). Met Sue while living in Perth.

1977-1979: Tp Comd, 2 Fd Svy Sqn. Included three 6 month survey ops in Indonesia (Op Cenderawasih in Irian Jaya 1977/78 and Op Pattimura in The Moluccas 1979). We got an Australian Service Medal with clasp “Irian Jaya” for Op Cenderawasih. We were supported by three Huey choppers, two Porters and two Caribou and (in Irian Jaya ) two Canberra bombers (for aerial photography) so I spent a lot of time as a (sometimes white-knuckled) passenger in the Hueys, Porters and Caribous. The recon for Op Pattimura meant flying in the back of a Caribou from Sydney to Manado in North Sulawesi via Mt Isa, Darwin and Ambon then back again. During the ops visited most towns and villages in the eastern part of Irian Jaya and most of the islands in the Moluccas. Also got to travel on HMAS Wewak (landing ship) from Manado to Ternate in the Halmaheras to set up a base camp.

1980-1981: SO3 Pers, HQ 2 Div

1982-1983: Overseas postinjg. Civil schooling at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), Rochester NY, USA. Degree in printing technology.

1984-1985: OC Litho Sqn, Army Svy Regt. (Map printing squadron)

1986-1988: SO2 Svy HQ 1 Div. Got to see most of eastern Northern Territory from a Porter during a recon.

1989: Command and Staff College.

1990-1991: SO1 Svy, Ops Br, Land Headquarters. Highlight was a senior officer visit to Indonesia via Christmas Island (in the back of a C130). Also got to recon the Torres Strait islands in a Porter flying from Cairns to Thursday Island then around the islands for a couple of days.

1992: CO School of Military Survey. Had a trip to Portsea for Trg Comd conference at the (then) School of Army Health. The diggers got sick of us knocking on their doors to have a look at our old rooms! Some of us tried the scramble course while we were there – but slowly!

1993: Deputy Commandant and CO Apprentice Bn, Army College of TAFE. (I was the second last CO of the Apprentice Bn!)

They tried to post me to a desk in Canberra so I resigned in Jan 94 and we bought a house in Sydney at Bangor (in The Shire ).

January 1994 to March 1995: Head of Studies, Graphic Arts, Sydney Institute of Technology, TAFE NSW. Training printers and photographers.

March 1995 to April 1998: Director, Corrective Services Academy, NSW Department of Corrective Services. Training prison officers. (Ex-army team: The Commissioner was MajGen Neville Smethurst who had been GOC when I was at LHQ and my boss was Col John Paget who had been Comdt of Land Warfare Centre). We had graduation parades for the trainees and I think I did more parades at the academy than I did in 23 years in khaki! One memorable grad parade was just before Xmas and the bandmaster and I decided to use Xmas carols for it, including an advance in review order to Deck the Halls . Also, I needed to improve the trainees marching skills so John Platt who was then CO School of Artillery kindly lent me couple of his warrant officers to help out. As part of the job I got to visit most gaols in NSW, Qld and Vic. Fortunately I didn’t see any of my old classmates on the other side of the bars!

May 1998 to present: Self employed, working from home, with Euar Software and Consulting Services doing s oftware and database development, technical writing and training consultancies. Went from one boss to many!

1999 to 2005: Part-time Community representative on the Radiation Health and Safety Advisory Council of the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA)

April 2012: Semi-retired. Vet Affairs Intermediate pension due to rheumatoid arthritis so can only work 20hrs per week.
